International medical transfer from Ghana to Australia for an ankle injury

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Fractured Ankle

A medical emergency abroad can quickly become stressful, especially when ongoing treatment is needed back home. For one 65-year-old patient visiting family in Ghana, a slip and fall accident resulted in a complicated left ankle injury that required medical transfer to Australia. At MTI 24/7, we coordinated the transfer from Accra, Ghana, to Sydney, Australia, providing bed-to-bed medical support and continuous monitoring throughout the flight.

Coordinating the international medical escort flight

Because of the patient’s condition, the journey required detailed planning before travel could take place. Our team arranged a medical escort flight in Business Class to provide additional comfort and support during the long-distance transfer.

We managed the airline clearance process and coordinated all medical travel logistics. Ground ambulance transportation was also organized on both sides of the journey, ensuring complete bed-to-bed service from the hospital in Ghana to the receiving hospital in Australia

This level of coordination helped create a smoother experience for the patient during a challenging situation.

Pre-flight medical assessment in Ghana

On the day of departure, our medical escort met the patient at the hospital in Accra and completed a pre-flight assessment before travel

The purpose of the assessment was to confirm the patient was stable enough to fly safely. Once the evaluation was completed, our medical escort accompanied the patient from the hospital to the airport and remained with him throughout the journey.

Having a trained medical professional present throughout the transfer helped provide reassurance and ongoing care during international travel.

An overview of Ghana

Monitoring the patient during the flight

Throughout the flight, our medical escort closely monitored the patient’s condition to help ensure a safe and comfortable journey. Regular checks included monitoring:

  • Temperature

  • Blood pressure

  • Oxygen saturation

  • Other vital observations

Because the patient had both a fractured ankle and significant soft tissue damage, continuous monitoring was an important part of the medical escort service.

Patient care during the Istanbul layover

The route from Ghana to Australia included a layover in Turkey before the second leg of the journey to Sydney.

During the stop at Istanbul Airport, the patient remained together with our medical escort in the business lounge while waiting for the connecting flight. The patient was settled, relaxed, and able to rest comfortably before continuing the trip.

Long international transfers can be physically demanding for injured patients, so maintaining comfort and stability during transit was an important part of the overall journey.

Safe arrival and hospital handover in Australia

After landing in Australia, our medical escort completed the final stage of the transfer by handing the patient over to the receiving ambulance team. The patient was then transported directly to The Mater Hospital for continued treatment of his ankle injury

From the initial hospital pickup in Ghana through to the final hospital handover in Australia, the transfer was completed safely and without complications. Continuous medical supervision throughout the journey helped ensure the patient received consistent care every step of the way.
